Full time Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Autonomous driving Engineering Research & Development Testing

Job Description

The Vehicle Test Engineering Manager will drive TRI’s emergent AD testing strategy, leading planning and design of TRI proving grounds, development of new test methods, equipment, processes, procedures and policies. This person will grow a team of test engineering personnel that supports testing efforts across North America.
We are looking for an experienced Automated Driving and/or ADAS testing leader who is passionate about developing and deploying technology that will improve the safety, accessibility, convenience, and efficiency of mobility solutions affecting millions of consumers. The Vehicle Test Engineering Team will work closely with TRI’s Field Operations personnel who do most of the driving/operation of TRI’s prototype AD vehicles. They will also work with Systems Engineering and Simulation teams on verification strategies. They will also work closely with Program Managers, on getting good test and demonstration plans in place, and helping the team execute to them. Test track personnel and test equipment suppliers will be critical supplier partners for the Test Team.
The position will initially report to TRI’s Director of Automated Driving Programs. Some domestic overnight travel required (<25%) with potentially significant local travel to regional test tracks (including Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Fowlerville, Ottawa Lake). Occasional travel to Japan is also likely.

  • Build knowledge of TRI’s vehicle testing needs, alternative testing facilities, state-of-the-art AD testing methods and test equipment.  Lead team to evaluate, select, install and operate test tools and software.  This includes a variety of “soft targets” and mobility mechanisms for them to operate within simulated traffic scenarios.  Maintain awareness of latest test technology in this fast-moving product space, continually growing TRI’s testing proficiency.
  • Design, develop, and operationalize TRI test tracks.  Ensure closed-course layouts, traffic controls, and roadside furniture for simulated urban and highway driving scenarios meet the evolving needs of the AD development team within our available track spaces.
  • Lead development of structured testing methods for Automated Driving Systems.  Ensure test measurement variation (Gauge R&R) is understood and minimized. Participate in industry conferences and committees with other experts in this area to gain expertise and support TRI’s interests.  Potentially influence development of industry standards.
  • Develop management systems that ensure proper vehicle systems are used for testing, along with proper test equipment configured for needed testing.
  • May support algorithm development personnel in completing Scrum-based sprints.  Support test plans, workload estimates, test execution, in support of TRI’s Agile development approach. Ensure testing issues are properly documented and communicated.  Ensure appropriate statistical tools are employed for test planning, analysis and reporting.
  • Based on driving and evaluation skills, the Vehicle Test Manager and engineering team members will support both subjective and objective vehicle tests.  This includes evaluating benchmark vehicles and testing TRI’s Guardian functionality in limit handling situations.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or equivalent work experience.  MS in engineering desirable.
  • At least 10 years of experience in test engineering for electro-mechanical embedded systems, including at least 3 years in ADAS testing.  Prefer at least 5 years working at vehicle test tracks and 2 years experience in Automated Driving.
  • At least 5 years directly supervising engineers and technicians, including performance management and recruiting.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.  Adept at summarizing and presenting complex test data in an informative and easily understood manner.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.  Able to influence without authority, working with technical and cross-functional teams to get things done.
  • Familiar with automotive test track best practices and safety policies.  Most valuable if you’ve developed them.
  • Broad knowledge of embedded software control of electromechanical systems.  Able to troubleshoot complex systems.
  • Experience operating sophisticated electronic test equipment.  Highly desirable if this includes soft targets and associated mobility platforms.
  • Experience developing DVP&R (Design Verification Plans and Reports), vehicle dynamics test procedures, and subjective vehicle evaluation techniques.
  • Experienced with reliability engineering, gauge R&R, DOE and other relevant statistical methods.
  • Strong attention to detail.  Methodical.
  • Maintains a safety-first mindset.
  • Automotive product development experience (beyond testing) highly desirable, especially with research and advanced technology development.
  • High-performance driver training, experience and certification highly desirable.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment highly desirable.
  • Experience with Google’s tool-suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Mail, Calendar, Drive, Hangouts, Groups), Jira, Confluence, Slack and some form of Drawing/MCAD.
